Lightning Sensor

January - April 2016

Uses a Very Low Frequency (VLF) sensor to detect lightning occurrences. Can detect changes in the ionosphere allowing the measurement of fluctuations in lightning strikes. A portable E-field sensor that measures the very low frequencies (10 kHz to 30 kHz) that are emitted by lightning. The incoming frequencies are amplified by an op-amp and sent through the PIC MCU. When the count of the number of lightning strikes reaches a certain threshold, the data is transmitted to the ground and recorded.
